– Then What?

When things don’t go to plan, play out the way we want or expect them to happen, invariably we feel disappointed or upset. It sounds like a reasonable response, doesn’t it, completely justifiable, given how hard we work, or how much energy we devote to a given outcome?

In my 30 years involved in elite sport, I have witnessed many “10000 hours” worth of quality training, only to find athletes miss the mark, or worse still not even show up when it counts?  One of the most common places athletes go to is, the feeling of surprise, that things haven’t gone the way they want it, followed by frustration that it should have, given their training program and commitment. Yet, no-where along the path is there any certainty in results and athletes in their heart know this fact.

In this conversation, we’ll take a closer look at human tendencies to live in and out of different worlds. As a National Coach, I would flit between the personal/material dimension (world rankings, qualification, results) and the philosophical (unknown, exploration, and presence). Each lens creates a different reality inside my mind, with entirely different responses.

It’s tricky sometimes to see how human consciousness is working. Still, when we get even a glimpse, we get to navigate our lives more in tune with our natural wiring, with clarity, creativity and joy alive in us.  When things don’t go the way you want it, you’ll feel disappointed perhaps, but with insight into how the lens of perspective is working, you won’t stay there for long!

What People Say About Working With Denise

Grayson Hart

I enjoyed speaking with Denise about the mind and performance. The conversations were very insightful and always had me challenging and questioning the status quo regarding mental performance. The critical pointer Denise gave was that our natural state is freedom of mind, clarity and potential. We don’t need to overexert the mind to find these states. Searching for them often leads us further into tension. I found this very relatable to direct experiences in life and sport.

Hannah Salem

I used to struggle to remain calm and confident in stressful situations, what others think of me, what would happen if I did something wrong? We are all capable of achieving, no part of our abilities is lacking! This programme has truly changed me for the best and is perfect during my final year of University.

Meeting Denise was perfect timing, written in the stars, foretold, whatever. My world was falling apart, my marriage had ended, my child was in serious trouble, and I was upping sticks and moving up North to run the biggest, most complex project of my career.
Four months later, my project is an astonishing success, my marriage is back on track, and best of all, my baby is coming back to me. I am different at work, at home, inside my head, and others can see it. The dark days aren’t dark any more because they don’t last, and the light days are far more frequent. Denise’s workj isn’t just amazing in the world of sport but any area of life.
